Deutsche Telekom Bets on Jajah’s VoIP Technology

Deutsche Telekom’s investment arm, the T-Online Venture Fund, announced that it is investing in a VoIP startup called Jajah, making Germany’s top teleco one of the first major telephone incumbents to fund a third-party internet phone provider.

Some landline providers have rolled out their own VoIP services, but few have funded startups specializing in the technology due to fears of cannibalizing their own fixed-line and/or wireless revenues.

Jajah has little trouble gaining the attention of other big-name investors, however, with chipmaker, Intel, plunging $20 million into the Silicon Valley-based startup earlier this month.

Deutsche Telekom says it hopes to take a novel approach by embedding Jajah’s technology into its internet properties, and future products (possibly smartphones…).

“By investing in companies like Jajah, we will be able to continue to bring users around the world the innovative solutions they are looking for,” commented T-Online Venture Fund chairman, Andreas Kindt, in a company statement.
