Enterprise VoIP deployments are more common than ever before, according to a new survey by BT INS, in which 62% of respondents had either deployed IP-based voice technology or were in the process of doing so. This represents a 44% increase over 2005 statistics.

Justifying cost of VoIP implementation to upper management, however, has become a major barrier-to-entry, and was described as significant by 46% of respondents.

Cost justification and technical integration issues were the most prevalent of fifteen possible barriers to VoIP adoption, while concerns about QoS maintenance costs ranked third.

The BT INS survey also asked IT professionals to rank a list of criteria for choosing a VoIP platform, and discovered that network reliability, voice quality, security, network manageability, and service guarantees are the most sought after features.
