Basking Ridge, New Jersey-based telecom equipment maker, Avaya, is exploring the idea of selling off part or all of its operations, and may already be in talks with private equity firms or other bidders, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal yesterday.

Sliver Lake Partners, a private equity group, may be planning a leveraged-buyout of Avaya, according to the Journal, and competitors such as Nortel Networks and Cisco Systems may also be interested.

Avaya, whose market capitalization currently sits at $6.18 billion, is certainly an attractive acquisition target, due to its debt-free status, steady cash flow, and many long-term service contracts. The company is expected to drive a hard bargain, however, meaning that talk of a deal is nothing more than speculation at this point.
