Wal-Mart began offering Skype airtime cards and compatible VoIP hardware products on Monday, through its network of 1,800 retail outlets throughout the United States.

Shoppers can now purchase prepaid Skype airtime in $20 increments, or try out three months of unlimited PC-to-Phone calling for just $8.85.

Making Skype’s services available in mainstream retail channels, together with Skype-certified headsets, handsets, and other accessories, is expected to boost the online VoIP provider’s mass-market appeal, generating higher revenues for its parent company, eBay.

Wal-Mart, meanwhile, says it is adding Skype to its product lineup “to address the growing popularity and demand for Internet communications among U.S. consumers.”
