Verizon Wireless to Unveil iPhone Competition by Summer’s End

There’s no doubt about it: the Apple iPhone is the most widely anticipated new mobile device of the year, and a big boon to America’s leading wireless carrier, AT&T Wireless, amid its ongoing brand transition.

It was actually AT&T’s leading competitor, Verizon Wireless, however, that had first dibs on the iPhone, but turned it down, saying that Apple’s terms for exclusivity were unreasonable.

“We said no [to the iPhone offer]. We have nothing bad to say about the Apple iPhone. We just couldn’t reach a deal that was mutually beneficial,” commented Jim Gerace, an executive vice president with Verizon Wireless, which apparently has no regrets about the decision.

“The issue is not the Apple-ness of the iPhone itself, but with the cellular network that it is running on,” said Verizon COO, Denny Strigl, implying the inferiority of AT&T’s cellular network. “That will be the true test of the iPhone: What will the iPhone experience be?”

Verizon revealed last week that it has already begun working with an unnamed manufacturer on a new cellular device that will compete directly against Apple’s product.

“We do have a very good response in the mill,” Strigl said, noting that the new product would be unveiled by late summer.

    1. Nothing these companies make will be equal to or better than the iPhone for a long time! Especially the awesome user interface and multi-touchscreen communication! I’ve already reserved money for this device…

    7. I find it very amussing that any one would even think there will be a phone better then the iPhone. Maybe some time in the future, but no time soon. I have an iPhone and its like nothing I have ever seen before. Verizon made the biggest mistake by not coming to an agreement with apple, and thank god for those guys at at&t that are willing to take a chance
