Products based on a draft specification of the 802.11n wireless broadband technology should be available in stores this summer, according to the Wi-Fi Alliance, which plans begin certifying “Draft-N” routers, networking cards, and microchips in June.

The 802.11n specification, which won’t be formally standardized until 2009, transmits data five times faster than its widely used 802.11g counterpart, and offers significantly higher range. “Wireless-N” products are already being marketed by Linksys and other vendors, but have not yet been certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance, an industry trade group responsible for testing and approving new Wi-Fi hardware.

Draft-N certified products will be guaranteed to work with one another, 802.11g products, and future devices based on the final 802.11n standard.

Wi-Fi technology is expected to appear in an increasing number of mobile phones, televisions, and video gaming systems in the next few years, above and beyond its core market of laptops and access points.
