Apple iPhone Faces Uphill Battle to Meet Consumer Expectations

The forthcoming Apple iPhone, set to launch throughout the U.S. on Friday, has been the focus of unprecedented levels of hype over the past few weeks, and has already gained the blind faith of many cell phone users.
“This is the most expected phone since Alexander Graham Bell’s. Expectations are just off the charts,” explained Jupiter Research analyst, Michael Gartenberg. “All anyone wants to talk about these days — not just technology people, but mainstream consumers — is the iPhone.”
As American wireless customers eagerly await this “revolutionary†voice, music, and data device, however, some industry watchers believe it impossible for the iPhone to meet expectations – not to mention live up to its hefty price tag.
“God himself could not design a device that could live up to all the hype that the iPhone has gotten,” commented Harvard computer science professor, David Platt.
There’s no doubt that plenty of iPhones will be sold this summer, but the product’s ability to maintain volume through the fall and into the Christmas shopping season will be far more indicative of its long-term success. Apple will most likely need to strategically lower the iPhone’s $500+ price tag over the coming months if it hopes to drive consistent volume, and achieve its ambitious goal of selling 10-million units by the middle of 2008.
