The influence of Asian markets and companies on the global DSL market continued to increase in the first quarter of this year, according to new research by Dittberner Associates.

Worldwide shipments of DSL equipment reached their highest level ever in the first three months of 2007, driven largely by higher-than-expected market growth in China, which accounted for more than a third of all new DSL subscribers for the quarter.

This was reflected in the sales of Asian broadband equipment vendors, Huawei Technologies and ZTE, whose combined market share surpassed that of market leader, Alcatel-Lucent, for the first time last quarter.

“DSL shipments into North America will continue to decline, due to the slowdown in AT&T’s buildout, Verizon’s shift to FTTH (fiber-to-the-home) and the absence of alternative service providers,” Dittberner predicted.
