Satellite television providers, DirecTV and EchoStar, have announced a partnership with WiMAX operator, Clearwire Corp., to bundle wireless broadband with satellite TV.

This deal will give the satellite providers a stronger position in their ongoing battle with incumbent cable companies, which have traditionally had a monopoly on TV/broadband bundling.

Clearwire, meanwhile, which serves over 250,000 wireless broadband users in 40 U.S. markets, will gain a wider mass-market appeal and new distribution channels for its WiMAX services.

“We’re pleased to partner with these two satellite companies as they both share our commitment to offering a superior customer experience by enabling customers to enjoy the benefits of unwired services,” commented Clearwire president and COO, Perry Satterlee. “By expanding the reach of our services through DirecTV and EchoStar, and by incorporating direct-to-home satellite video services in our own distribution channels, we believe we have an opportunity to significantly expand our business opportunity.”
