UK Broadband, a wireless internet carrier owned by Hong Kong’s PCCW, is planning to launch a mobile WiMAX service in the British market, as soon as it can obtain the approval of telecom regulator, Ofcom.

The company already holds a 3.5-GHz airwaves license to offer fixed wireless broadband in the UK, and is lobbying Ofcom to make the license “technology and service neutral” and permit higher power levels. If regulators approve the plan, UK Broadband will be in a position to offer mobile WiMAX, in addition to its existing TD-CDMA-based mobile broadband service.

Ofcom has established a special consultation to consider UK Broadband’s request, and is expected to reach a decision at the end of August.
