Verizon Promises High-Definition Video On Demand in Near Future

U.S. telecom giant, Verizon Communications, plans to offer high-definition Video On Demand content over its FiOS television network, although a firm launch date has yet to be announced.
Verizon is currently rolling out fiber-optic broadband and video infrastructure throughout its service footprint, and has begun offering advanced entertainment service like HDTV and VOD, so as to better challenge cable rivals. The carrier’s Chief Technology Officer, Mark Wegleitner, says that it’s only a matter of a short time until these two features are combined.
“I don’t think there are technical obstacles,” Wegleitner told reporters at the NXTcomm communications conference earlier this week. “The network could support it now.”
The company is currently testing such service in labs and has its own internal timeline, Wegleitner explained.
Verizon is investing a total of $18 billion in its fiber-optic network from 2004 to 2010, and expects its FiOS service footprint to cover 9 million households by the end of 2007.
