Verizon Communications announced two new cable TV franchises last week, in the municipalities of Newport News, Virginia, and Old Field, New York.
The Newport News franchise covers over 70,000 households, and will allow Verizon to go head-to-head with Comcast in one of Virginia’s largest metropolitan areas. In the Long Island village of Old Field, meanwhile, Verizon’s FiOS television service is now free to take on local cable incumbent Cablevision Systems.
This brings the total number of Verizon cable franchises in Virginia and New York to 19 and 44, respectively.
The telecom giant also announced that it was making its fiber-optic TV service available to an additional 10,000 households Florida’s Pasco County, where 66,000 residences are already equipped for FiOS, under an existing cable franchise.
