The British division of AOL, now owned by Carphone Warehouse, announced last week that it would soon begin offering free Dell laptops, worth approximately £500, to new customers willing to sign a two-year broadband service contract.

Incentives to sign ISP contracts have become increasingly common over the past couple of years, with broadband providers around the world desperate to reduce subscriber churn – the expensive loss of accounts as customers hop from one service to another.

In the UK alone, Orange has teamed up with retail giant, Curry’s, to offer £300 computer coupons to new subscribers, while Carphone Warehouse offers “free” high-speed internet access for customers willing to sign an 18-month TalkTalk telephone service contract.

The new AOL deal, which goes live in September, appears to be the most generous yet. The company has already stockpiled 100,000 of the Dell Inspiron laptops, and is inviting customers to pre-register for the deal, according to one spokesman.

    2. I’m not sure of their exact policies. Some ISPs here in Canada will let you take a credit towards a PC of your choice.

You’d have to contact AOL in the UK and ask whether they’re willing to customize the deal a little.
