Apple Expected to Limit European iPhone Launch this Year

Britain’s Financial Times is reporting that Apple will restrict the European availability of its popular, multi-purpose iPhone device to France, Germany, and the UK this year, before launching it throughout Europe and Asia in 2008.
British cell phone carrier, O2, is close to securing an exclusive contract with Apple for the UK market, according to the Financial Times, and should be in a position to launch the iPhone in time for the Christmas shopping season.
Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile, meanwhile, is a clear favourite for Germany’s iPhone contract, and is refusing to comment on rumours that it has already won such a deal.
The world’s largest wireless carrier, Vodafone Group, is unlikely to win an iPhone contract in Europe this year, according to analysts, as that company’s focus is currently on advanced 3G voice and data handsets, rather than 2.5G multimedia devices like the iPhone.
The eagerly awaited iPhone went on sale across the United States last Friday, and sold an incredible 500,000 units during its first weekend on the market.
