European FTTH Networks to Reach 14 Million Customers by 2012

Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) telecom networks will reach more than 14 million European households by 2012, according to a recent report by Frost & Sullivan.
The report, entitled Fibre in the Last Mile in Europe, estimates that around 2.5 million European homes were already connected to fiber optic (FTTx) networks, as of late 2006. Frost & Sullivan analyst, Fernando Elizalde, predicts that demand for fiber will grow rapidly in the years to come, as convergence, high-bandwidth applications, and digital video services drive up bandwidth usage.
Europe will gradually end its dependence on slower DSL networks, Elizalde predicts, as higher-bandwidth broadband applications become increasingly mainstream.
