FTTH Begins to Eclipse DSL in Japanese Broadband Market
1:08 pm on July 14, 2007 | Category: Telecom Services, Internet
Japan’s broadband market continues to grow quickly, with the country’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) reporting the net addition of 680,000 high-speed internet subscriptions in the first quarter of this year.
At the end of March, Japan had a total of 26.44-million broadband subscribers, 33% of which use FTTH (fiber-to-the-home) connections. The majority of customers (53%) continue to use DSL internet services, but this segment of the market is beginning to shrink, as higher-bandwidth fiber-optic networks become increasingly available.
FTTH internet services managed to add 863,499 subscribers in the first quarter, while DSL lost 222,668. Cable connections, which account for about 14% of the Japanese broadband market, remained steady, adding 42,550 users.
