Research In Motion has announced its first dual-mode BlackBerry handheld, which will offer wireless voice and data access over both cellular and Wi-Fi networks, and compete against the recently launched Apple iPhone device.
The BlackBerry 8820 will be the slimmest ever RIM device to boast a full QWERTY keyboard. It is multimedia-capable, playing music and videos, and comes with GPS satellite navigation functionality.
”The BlackBerry 8820 complements our carrier partners’ cellular networks with the added ability to stay connected via Wi-Fi at home, through hotspots and corporate campuses,” commented RIM president and co-CEO, Mike Lazaridis. It will be offered by AT&T Inc. in the United States, beginning later this summer.
Research In Motion has been increasingly targeting the consumer market in recent months, after the success of its multimedia-enabled BlackBerry Pearl device.
