South Korea’s Samsung Electronics has apparently surpassed U.S. rival, Motorola Inc., even more quickly than anticipated, to become the world’s number two mobile phone manufacturer, by second-quarter shipments.

Samsung shipped a total of 37.4 million units in the three months ending on June 30, compared to an estimated 35 to 36 million unit shipments tentatively reported by Motorola.

In the months to come, Samsung hopes to consolidate its newfound lead, and expects to consistently beat the market in the traditionally-stronger second half. The company forecasts full-year growth of 32% for 2007, and aims to ship over 150 million units by the end of this year.
