Solar Radiation Responsible for Many Dropped Cell Phone Calls

Ultraviolet radiation from solar flares could be responsible many dropped cell phone calls, according to a recent Queen’s University study, set to be published in a forthcoming issue of the international technology journal, Proceedings of the IEEE.
Radioactive energy bursts emitted by the sun can potentially interfere with wireless signals when a host cell tower’s antennae is in direct sunlight. This phenomenon is apparently responsible for between nine and 20 percent of dropped cell phone calls.
“We believe that this is caused by the Sun radiating energy into the Earth’s magnetic field,” commented Dr. David Thomson, a professor at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario. “It’s one of those things that people look at and say, ‘It can’t possibly be,’ but a lot of experts have now given a thumbs-up to this theory.”
“Understanding our Sun’s more than 10 million normal modes and their interactions with engineering systems on Earth is a challenge that we are just beginning to undertake,” Thomson explained. “What we have discovered is surprising and very different from the explanations that appear in most engineering textbooks.”
Dr. Thomson has been studying satellite communication failures since the 1990s, and was appointed as Canada Research Chair in Statistics and Signal Processing at Queens University in 2002.
