The global cell phone market is in another year of record growth, notwithstanding the weak sales of Motorola, with several companies reporting second-quarter annual growth in the mid double-digits (%).

Sony Ericsson has reported the biggest gains so far, with second quarter handset shipments soaring 59% from the same period last year. The company shipped 24.9 million units in Q2, up from 21.8 million in the first quarter, and 15.7 million in the second quarter of 2006

Sony Ericsson, which currently holds the #4 spot worldwide, has increased its share significantly in the past year by outselling rivals in developing markets like Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East, and by launching a number of new high-end cell phones in western Europe.

“We expect the market in 2007 to remain competitive, but with recently announced products such as the flagship Walkman and Cyber-shot models we aim to continue to grow faster than the market,” commented Sony Ericsson president, Miles Flint, in a company statement.
