Almost two thirds of U.S. consumers want televisions that are linked to the internet; a trend that will drive strong sales of network-enabled consumer electronics, according to a recent iSuppli report entitled, “Home Networking: In Search of a Killer Connection.”

Home networking is “migrating beyond its PC-centric beginnings” to include entertainment-oriented devices like DVD recorders, set-top boxes, digital televisions, Digital Video Recorders, and video game consoles, the research firm explains.

61% of those surveyed, including 71% of male respondents, were interested in networking their televisions with the internet, according iSuppli’s first-quarter 2007 consumer demand survey.

“The awareness and demand for media home networking is growing rapidly among consumers,” commented iSuppli’s principal networking and optical communications analyst, Steve Rago.

The study concluded that home-based Local Area Networks have plenty of room to grow from a current global penetration rate of 3%, and that Wi-Fi would become the most common technology for home media networking.
