Hardware giant, Apple Inc., is facing another intellectual property lawsuit over its recently launched iPhone handset device.

Florida-based SP Technologies claims that the iPhone’s touch-screen keyboard infringes on a patent that it registered in 2000, covering “method and medium for computer readable keyboard display incapable of user termination.”

“The input area may contain a keyboard which is an image map,” reads this very general patent, which could theoretically refer to almost any of the on-screen ’soft keyboards’ included with various PDAs and high-end mobile devices.

The timing of this lawsuit, and the fact it singles out the iPhone device, is very suspicious to say the least.

This is the second intellectual property lawsuit to target the Apple iPhone. The first was a trademark case initiated by Cisco Systems, and quickly settled out of court.
