Kirkland, Washington-based wireless broadband provider, Clearwire Corp., is bringing its WiMAX internet service in Nashville, Tennessee, putting it in competition with communications giants, AT&T and Comcast.

Clearwire was founded in 2003 by cell phone entrepreneur, Craig McCaw, and now offers wireless broadband in 43 U.S. markets in 15 states. It focuses mostly on mid-sized cities, as opposed to large metropolises.

Clearwire’s service is “the first wave of mobile broadband,” according to Yankee Group chief strategy officer, Berge Ayvazian, noting that Clearwire uses WiMAX base stations to transmit wireless data signals to homes and businesses.

Although WiMAX coverage remains limited at this point in time, Ayvazian expects the market to surge in the next few years, with the number of North American WiMAX subscribers growing from about 200,000 this year to 8 million in 2011.
