America’s 19 largest cable and telecom providers added 1.72 million high-speed internet subscribers in the second quarter of this year, according to Leichtman Research Group, bringing their combined subscriber base to 57.96 million on June 30.

Leading cable companies reportedly had 31.52 million broadband customers at the end of Q2, while telecom incumbents boasted 26.44 million subscriptions.

Telecom giant, AT&T Inc., is the largest single broadband provider in the U.S., with 13.25 million users, and 398,000 subscriber additions in the second quarter. Cable operator, Comcast, added 330,000 broadband customers in Q2 for a total user base of 12.38 million.

Total subscriber growth among leading broadband providers finally appears to be shrinking, off from a peak of over 2 million net additions in the second quarter of 2006.
