Apple’s famous multimedia-enabled smartphone, the Apple iPhone, is set to become a new focus for mobile game developers, with one of America’s top game publishers, PopCap Games, betting on the new handset’s success.

PopCap announced yesterday that it had launched a custom version of its flagship game, Bejeweled, which would be offered at no cost, exclusively to iPhone users.

“We’re excited to be providing the most popular puzzle game of the 21st century to users of the most advanced mobile device yet created,” said PopCap’s director of mobile platforms, Andrew Stein, in a statement. “We wanted to give the hundreds of thousands of iPhone users a fun, fast gaming fix — and at no cost, no less.”

Users can play the new version of Bejeweled, which has been optimized to take advantage of the iPhone’s unique display and input controls, by logging on to PopCap.com via the iPhone’s Safari Web browser.

Analysts are describing PopCap’s interest in the iPhone is a significant milestone for the device, and believe that this is just the beginning for major game publishers seeking to capitalize on Apple’s newfound success in the cell phone market.
