Internet telephony provider, Skype, is offering a week of free VoIP service to all paying customers who may have been affected by a two-day service outage late last week.

The company has sent out a special email to all premium subscribers, notifying them that their subscriptions would be extended by seven days, said Skype spokeswoman, Imogen Bailey.

“As a goodwill gesture to all you faithful Skype Pro, Skype Unlimited, SkypeIn, or Skype Voicemail customers, we’re adding an additional seven days to your current subscription free of charge,” reads the email from Skype. “And even if you didn’t miss out on using Skype last week, you can still have a week free on Skype, on the house.”

The widespread collapse of Skype’s network was reportedly caused by millions of Windows computers around the world restarting and trying to log on to Skype at the same time. Some bloggers, however, have expressed doubts about this official explanation.

Offering a week of free VoIP seems to be Skype’s way of reaching out to dissatisfied customers, especially business users, who may cancel their subscriptions as a result of the outage.
