Demand for faster internet connections, and the prevalence of bandwidth-hungry applications like IPTV and online video, will continue to fuel strong global broadband growth, according to a recent study by Strategy Analytics.

High-speed internet connections will be present in 536 million households worldwide by 2011, the study says. DSL will continue to represent a large majority of subscribers for the foreseeable future, but fiber-optic broadband and WiMAX are expected to be the fastest growing technologies over the next five years.

“Ambitious fiber rollouts in the US by Verizon and AT&T, and in Europe by French operator Free, will bring overall FTTX subscriptions to 64 million by 2011,” predicted Ben Piper, the Director of Strategy Analytics’ Broadband Network Strategies Service.
