British mobile software developer, Symbian, announced a 52% increase in second-quarter product shipments yesterday, with total volume rising to 18.7 million units.

The company also reported 7% growth in revenue since the second quarter of last year, with Q2 2007 sales of £44.1 million ($88.89 million). Revenue growth has slowed in recent months, as Symbian has reduced prices to appeal to a broader market.

Symbian produces operating systems and other applications for a wide range of mobile handsets, particularly smartphones. It is 47.9% owned by Finnish handset giant, Nokia.

“It was a good quarter for the smartphone sector, but we grew faster than the market, boosting our market share to 72 percent,” said Symbian CEO, Nigel Clifford in an interview with Reuters, adding that developing markets like India and China were key to the increase in unit shipments.

Symbian does not publish market forecasts, but Clifford says he is confident that growth will continue for the rest of this year.
