Verizon Communications is aiming for a new competitive edge in the broadband market by allowing customers to lock in their monthly subscription prices for life.

The offer applies to Verizon’s 768-kbps and 3-Mbps high-speed internet plans, which are priced at $14.99 and $27.99/month respectively, with a two-year service commitment.

This aggressive pricing commitment requires customers to sign the two-year contract before October 31, and is partly intended to make 56-kbps dial-up holdouts switch to broadband service, according to Verizon spokesman, Bill Kula.

Verizon isn’t the first big telecom provider to offer this kind of locked-in pricing deal, in exchange for a two-year commitment. Qwest launched a similar program in July 2006, and has been “seeing a great response” according to a company spokeswoman.

Lifelong pricing contracts are designed to secure customer bases for the long-term, and prevent subscriber churn, a costly problem for many ISPs.
