Shipments of Voice over IP lines were up 30% in the second quarter of this year, compared to the same period in 2006, according to a report by the Dell’Oro Group.

This increase was fueled largely by growth in the small to medium-sized enterprise sector, where VoIP now accounts for a quarter of all voice line shipments. Dell’Oro researchers conclude that the migration to IP telephony will continue to accelerate in the coming months as telecom equipment vendors like Avaya, Cisco Systems, and Nortel Networks step up efforts to promote the technology.

Nortel led the worldwide IP voice market during the second quarter, followed by Avaya, which pulled off a record quarter thanks to strong gains in the European market.
