Airline communications provider, AirCell, announced on Thursday that it has reached an agreement to install Wi-Fi hotspots in Virgin America planes, beginning sometime in 2008.
The new service will allow Virgin passengers to check email, surf the internet, or connect to office networks whilst flying, using any Wi-Fi-enabled laptop, smartphone, PDA, or portable gaming system.
In-flight broadband is made possible by AirCell’s unique air-to-ground cellular network, which sends and receives live data to an from airplanes in the sky.
“AirCell’s broadband service is the obvious choice to add to our guest experience,†commented Virgin America’s director of In-flight Entertainment & Partnerships, Charles Ogilvie. “Our goal with broadband is simple: let guests decide how and when they want to communicate and interact by providing relevant options. In AirCell we have a partner who knows and understands innovation.â€
