Apple Inc. cut the price of its 8GB iPhone handset this week, from $599 to $399, and discontinued the $499 4GB model.

Some analysts raised concerns that Apple was doubting the iPhone’s staying power, but most agreed that the now-discounted iPhone would be a hot-ticket item this Christmas season.

“It’s hard to see how anyone is going to take much ground away from them this holiday,” commented Jupiter Research analyst Michael Gartenberg.

In addition to changing its iPhone strategy, Apple also revamped its full line of iPod music players, launching a new iPod that features a touch-screen, and Wi-Fi capability. The $299 device is capable of browsing the web and buying songs wirelessly when inside a wireless hotspot.

Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, said in an interview that the iPhone is still on track to hit European markets by year’s end. He speculated that both the iPhone and touch-screen iPod would experience significant success with European customers.
