BT Vision and Tiscali Fail to Make IPTV Mainstream in British Market

British internet service providers are far behind their European counterparts in terms of broadband TV deployment, according to a recent report by Screen Digest, which criticizes UK carriers for their “lackadaisical approach†to IPTV strategy.
France now has eight broadband television providers, Screen Digest said in its review of the European IPTV market, while Spain has four, and Italy and Germany have two each. The UK, however, has only one nationwide IPTV service, BT Vision, which has only been marketed since May.
The only other active IPTV provider in Britian is Tiscali, which offers service only in London, Surrey, and Hertfordshire.
“The UK began the year with only 54,000 IPTV customers, and while BT is now adding 2,000-3,000 customers per week, the delayed national roll-out of Tiscali TV has ensured that fewer than one in 100 UK households will be taking IPTV by the end of the year,†Screen Digest noted. “By contrast … nearly one in 25 will have it in Spain and around one in ten French households will take IPTV by the beginning of 2008.â€
