More than one in five U.S. households now have at least one Digital Video Recorder, up from one in thirteen households just two years ago, says a consumer research study recently published by the Leichtman Research Group.

Leichtman surveyed 1,300 households and determined that 53% of DVR owners also have a high-definition TV set, and that the mean household income of DVR owners is 33% above average.

As pay-TV providers continue encouraging customers to purchase combined HD/DVR set-top boxes, Leichtman predicts that the number of DVR-equipped households in the U.S. will increase to more than 60 million by the end of 2011.

For the moment, however, analysts estimate that 95% of all TV viewing is still done live, without any pre-recording involved.
