Canadian telecom equipment giant, Nortel Networks, is planning to enter the mobile device market next year, by selling WiMAX-enabled devices to carrier customers, on top of its existing wireless broadband solutions.

Nortel’s new product line will consist mainly of early-market devices, such as PC express cards and USB dongles for WiMAX compatibility on laptop computers, as well as routers and gateways for home and business use. One forthcoming product, the WiMAX Indoor Premium Router, will have built-in Wi-Fi and VoIP capability, in addition to WiMAX.

All of Nortel’s devices will be built to meet Wave 2 industry certification requirements, and will adhere to other standards specified by Nortel.
