Vodafone customers in the UK will soon be able to gain unlimited access to a digital music library of over one million songs on their mobile phones, the wireless giant announced earlier this week.

Vodafone’s forthcoming MusicStation service will allow customers to download unlimited tracks from Universal Music Group, Sony BMG Music Entertainment EMI Music, and Warner Music Group, directly over onto their, at a cost of just £1.99 (US$4) per week.

Each MusicStation user will be able to build a music-based social network, messaging their friends and sharing song recommendations via a process called “collaborative filtering.” Downloaded songs will be stored centrally, meaning that if a customer’s handset is lost, stolen, or has to be replaced, all music, playlists, friends, and preferences will automatically be restored.

The MusicStation service will be available on a variety of new and existing mobile phones before Christmas, according to Vodafone.

“We’re building on the momentum of our Vodafone Mobile Internet launch and our commitment to music through the Vodafone TBAs and our Vodafone Live Music Awards,” said the company’s Chief Marketing Officer, Tim Yates. “Today’s announcement is a first for music on the mobile in the UK and means a fundamental change to the way people experience music on their phones.”
