WeatherBug Wins Mobile Weather Forecasting Contract with Verizon Wireless

WeatherBug has won an exclusive contract to deliver weather forecasts and information to Verizon Wireless cell phone users via a number of mobile web platforms, displacing the carrier’s previous partner, Weather.com.
WeatherBug claims to deliver more localized coverage than its competitors, due to a wide network of sensors and cameras placed atop schools throughout the United States. It will soon offer customized video forecasts through Verizon’s V CAST multimedia network, as well as text-based forecasts over the mobile internet.
Verizon Wireless is letting WeatherBug manage its own advertising on these platforms, making it one of the few Verizon parters able to sell ads directly.
Verizon executives believe that subscribers will value and appreciate WeatherBug’s high level of forecast accuracy.
“The ability to get weather updates, potentially life-saving weather alerts and information while on the go is important for our wireless customers,” commented the Verizon’s vice president of digital media programming, Ryan Hughes. “By offering WeatherBug’s reliable and accurate weather coverage across all Verizon platforms, we can create a consistent experience for our customers, regardless of the service they prefer to use to get their information.”
