Regional cell phone carrier, Alltel, announced on Monday that it had launched a Wi-Fi hotspot service, allowing subscribers to access the internet on their smartphones or laptops from some 60,000 wireless hotspots across North and South America.

The service is powered by Boingo Wireless, a private company created by EarthLink founder, Sky Dayton, which operates a huge network of hotspots in airports, hotels, cafes, and other public places throughout the western hemisphere.

Alltel is now offering unlimited Wi-Fi access from any supported hotspot for as little as $9.99 per month when bundled with an EV-DO mobile broadband service. The company is also rolling-out prepaid Wi-Fi cards, which sell for $20/week, or $10/day at any Alltel retail outlet.

By launching its own brand of Wi-Fi service, Alltel is attempting to better compete with larger rivals such as T-Mobile, which has been heavily promoting a similar network of wireless hotspots for some time now, and AT&T, which offers free Wi-Fi access to its DSL internet subscribers.
