The Apple iPhone, a popular music handset launched in the U.S. on June 29, has rocketed to the top of AT&T’s best-selling handsets list, accounting for nearly 13% of the companies overall sales this summer, according to a recent report by Strategy Analytics.

“The sales trajectory we are observing with the iPhone could make it the top-selling device in the U.S. over the next 1-2 quarters,” predicted Strategy Analytics analyst, Barry Gilbert, who expects the iPhone to eclipse to heavily discounted but tired Motorola RAZR V3, which has been America’s top-selling device for the past several quarters.

Strategy Analytics described the typical iPhone buyer as being aged 20 to 30, “college-educated and fairly wealthy, coming from a household with six-figure income.” Researchers also discovered that almost 25% of buyers are in their 50′s, however, suggesting that the iPhone has broad appeal with both older and younger users.

The iPhone’s strong debut resulted in blowout financial results for Apple this summer, and further success is expected as the device begins to go international, beginning with Germany, France, and the UK next month.
