Apple Software Upgrade Proves Problematic for Unlocked iPhones
6:00 am on October 1, 2007 | Category: Mobile Devices, Cell Phones, Software
Apple’s recent iPhone software upgrade causes problems on iPhone devices that have been hacked to work on networks other than AT&T Wireless, reported a number of technology and gadget websites over the weekend.
The optional upgrade allows users to access the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store and fixes a number of security flaws, but has the potential to permanently damage iPhones that have been ‘hacked’ to work on foreign cellular networks.
Gadget enthusiasts and programmers say that hacked iPhones either cease to work, or operate only with their original SIM card, depending on the unlocking software used. Some users have also reported problems with unrelated third-party applications installed on their unlocked iPhones.
Apple acknowledged last week, before launching the update, that it could cause problems on hacked iPhones, but denied that it was proactively trying to make unlocked devices useless.
