America’s largest cell phone carrier, AT&T Wireless, is expanding its mobile music business, through a deal with subscription-based digital music giant, Napster Inc.

Starting in mid-November, the service will allow AT&T users to download their choice of over five million full-length songs from Napster, directly onto their mobile handsets. Customers will be able to download music at a pay-per-use cost of $1.99 per track, or buy five tracks a month for $7.49.

The companies are offering the first five song downloads at no cost, in hopes of drumming up interest in the so called “Napster Mobile” service.

“This relationship reinforces AT&T’s leadership in providing the industry’s largest mobile music platform,” commented Mark Collins, an executive with AT&T’s wireless unit.

AT&T is already known for its strong position in the mobile music market, and already provides its users with wireless access to Apple iTunes, eMusic, and XM Satellite Radio.
