Millions of broadband subscribers around the world are accepting Internet-based pay-TV services, with the global IPTV subscriber count rising from 2,950,000 to 8,229,000 in the twelve months leading up to June 2007, according to new data collected by Point Topic, on behalf of the DSL Forum.

The bulk of this growth came out of Europe, where IPTV’s user base more than tripled from 1,505,000 to 4,984,000. North and South America also saw a significant increase in IPTV subscriptions, adding 660,000 users for a total of 1,069,000, while Asia Pacific countries added 1,189,000 subscribers, giving it a total of 2,176,000.

“We’re very excited about these figures,” commented the DSL Forum’s marketing director, Laurie Gonzalez. “Even a year ago people were asking whether IPTV would be a compelling application. Today more than eight million customers are using it in every region of the world. It’s gone far beyond testing to real roll-out.”
