Engineers at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland claim to have made a technological breakthrough that will eventually make for mobile phones that are as powerful as laptops.

A team of researchers led by Dr. Michael Zaiser says that “handheld supercomputers” could become a reality through the use of wires that are 1,000 times thinner than a human hair.

“Holding a supercomputer in the palm of your hand will one day be possible – and we are going to make sure all the wires are in the right place,” Zaiser said in an interview with the BBC.

For the time being, the scientists are only revealing that they’ve discovered microscopic wires to behave in a “funny way,” but that they have developed a computer program that can predict the variances and avoid them.

Their findings draw on the expertise of researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the University of Rome, and are set to be published in the journal: Science in the near future.
