Research In Motion announced yesterday that users of its BlackBerry email devices will have access to a new software application providing optimized access to the popular social networking website, Facebook.

The application will allow Facebook users to automatically receive messages and notifications on their BlackBerry devices in much the same way as push email, according to a statement from RIM. This means that users will be able to read and compose Facebook messages even when they are offline.

This is RIM’s latest effort to expand its market share among consumers, to complement its strong sales in the enterprise wireless email market.

“Facebook is one of the fastest growing web destinations among BlackBerry smart-phone users,” said RIM co-CEO, Mike Lazaridis, in a company statement.
