Milpitas, California-based flash memory maker, SanDisk Corp., has introduced an innovative and inexpensive new product to transfer digital video to television sets.

The Sansa TakeTV video player consists of a USB drive, remote control, and small docking station that plugs into the back of a compatible TV set. Users can attach the drive to any computer, then drag and drop files onto the device for later television viewing.

This nifty product comes in two versions – a 4-Gigabyte model for $99.99, and an 8-Gigabyte one for $149.99, which can hold up to 10 hours of digital video.

“It’s actually a good idea because companies have been challenged in making that connection (between the PC and TV),” commented ABI Research analyst, Steve Wilson, noting that USB is a familiar and hassle-free method of making that connection. “They’re leveraging a model that people are very familiar with.”

SanDisk also announced that it is launching an online video sales business, called Fanfare, which allows users to download premium TV shows for $1.99 a pop. Availability will initially be limited to about 85 titles; including shows from CBS, Showtime, TV Guide, and Smithsonian Networks; but will be gradually expanded at a rate of several dozen titles each week.
