Verizon Communications introduced an unusual new fiber-optic broadband plan this week, which uploads data as fast as it downloads.

The new ‘symmetrical’ plan is initially available in Verizon’s FiOS service areas in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, and will “soon” be launched in 13 other states, according to company spokesman, Mark Marchand. If offers upstream and downstream bandwidth of 20-Mbps, and costs $65 per month when bundled with a local phone line from Verizon.

By increasing upstream data speeds, Verizon is taking advantage of fiber-optic technology in a way that’s very hard for its cable rivals to duplicate, since cable broadband services involve sharing bandwidth among neighbours.

Merchand said that the new plan should benefit telecommuters and others who work from home, noting that video conferencing, movie uploads, and online file backup will all become much faster and easier. A 3-Gigabyte file, for example, which would take nine hours to upload over a typical DSL connection, could be placed online in just 20 minutes with symmetrical FiOS.
