Paris-based telecom equipment manufacturer, Alcatel-Lucent, has signed a package of contracts with China’s two state-owned wireless carriers, China Mobile and China Unicom.

The new agreements, some of which were previously announced, have a combined value of up to €750 million, or US$1.1 billion. They involve network expansion, particularly into rural areas of China.

French President, Nicolas Sarkozy traveled to China to sign the deal, alongside Chinese President, Hu Jintao. Sarkozy’s role was mostly ceremonial, however, since the French government has no stake in Alcatel-Lucent.
