Internet-based television services will reach 39.6 million subscribers worldwide by the end of 2010, up from less than 4 million in 2006, according to a recent study by Canalys.
Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, which accounted for two-thirds of global IPTV subscriptions at the end of 2006, is expected to remain the leading global region through 2010, although it will only account for 38% of the worldwide total by that time, according to the report.
“France is the European IPTV trailblazer, boasting 1.3 million subscribers at the end of 2006,†said Canalys vice president, Alessandra Fitzpatrick, in a statement.
North America is expected to show significant IPTV growth over the next three years, as Verizon, AT&T, and Telus continue to expand their fiber-optic television networks in the U.S. and Canada. The continent will be home to an estimated 12.1 million IPTV subscribers by the end of 2012, accounting for 31% of the global total, up from just 9% in 2006.
Asia-Pacific countries, meanwhile, are expected to have more than 11 million IPTV customers by 2010.
“IPTV will be a financial loss leader for many providers over the next five years when the costs involved with rolling out and evolving services are factored in, but if telecom operators are to retain their position as primary providers of consumer communication services, this may be a price they need to pay,” Ms. Fitzpatrick commented.
