Shipments of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) networking equipment will reach record levels this year according to a new report by the market research firm, Dittberner.

FTTH shipments rose 7% in the third quarter of this year (versus Q2), and 25% in the second quarter (versus Q1). Fiber-optic port shipments were up 38% in the third quarter, compared to the same period last year, and already exceeded 90% of the total shipments for 2006, virtually guaranteeing that 2007 will be the strongest year on record.

The Dittberner report credited a strong Japanese market for the high growth this year. Japan’s leading telecom carrier, NTT, added 423,000 FTTH subscribers in the third quarter of this year, while U.S. operator, Verizon Communications, added 227,000 in the same three-month period.
