More than 56% of the customers passed by Fiber-to-the-Home networks will subscribe to fiber-optic broadband or television services by 2011, according to a report by ABI Research.
ABI analysts predict that as demand increases for services like IPTV, VoIP, and Video On Demand, so will adoption of FTTH networks, with Gigabit Passive Optical Networks (GPONs) taking the lead.
“As a result of the general shift to higher-bandwidth capabilities for access networks, and the evolution of existing [Broadband Passive Optical Networks] and [Ethernet Passive Optical Networks] networks as compared with the evolution of GPON networks, GPON subscribers will account for almost double the number of subscribers to EPON and BRON combined,†predicted ABI research director, Stan Schatt.
“EPON has the lead within the initial part of the forecast period, but GPON will have a decisive lead in the second half of the forecast period,†Schatt explained.
